Local History
Originally named Waletone after the Anglo Saxon word for Village of the Britons, Wallington once held by William the Conqueror during his reign from 1066 until his death in 1087 was and in many ways still very much is, due to the lavender fields on its outskirts of the village, an important centre for the production of lavender, this is further recognised by the sculpture created by artist Guy Portelli depicting a lavender plant that was installed at the Junction of Woodcote Road and Stafford Road in 1999.
The area is steeped in history with many of the village's traditions still being practised today, such as the annual crowning of the Wallington May Queen which dates back to 1902, and traditional farmers markets going as far back as the town's first settlers. Wallington is a fantastic, cultural and lively place to live.
